LESSON 2

DEITY OF CHRIST – “Deity” is taken from Latin, and means, "God". Christianity serves One God. Belief in One God is the Doctrine of MONOTHEISM. TRINITARIANISM, or THE TRINITY, is taken from the bible as God is revealed as One God in Three Divine Persons.

Jesus Christ is One of the Personal distinctions within the One Christian God. While Jesus is God, Jesus is not all that God is. God is a Trinity of Persons.

God the Son, Jesus, is also called The Word of God, not to be confused with the writtten word (the bible) of God. Jesus, The Second Person of the Trinity, is spoken of as second because of the different roles of each Person within God.

God the Father is the fountainhead within the Trinity and is "unbegotten". God the Son, Jesus, is "begotten (not made) of the Father". And, God The Holy Spirit, proceeds from the Father. These are the roles that describe the relationships within the Trinity, within the One God we serve as Christians.

Jesus is deity because He has a "divine nature". Jesus possesses the very nature of God. In time, Jesus condescended to earth (His incarnation), and was born of The Virgin Mary. Being found in the fashion of a man, Jesus took to Himself a human nature. Now, Jesus has both, a divine nature, and a human nature. This doctrine is known as "the hypostatic union" of Christ.

Scriptures showing Christ is God.
John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Jesus claimed to be God
John 5:17-18, “Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at work to this very day , and I too am working. For this reason they tried to kill him, not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was also calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.”

God the Father calls Jesus, God
Hebrews 1:8-12, “But about the Son, God the Father says, “Your throne, Oh God, will last forever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the secpter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.

ORIGINAL SIN - Genesis 2:16-17, “And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

Genesis 3:1-7 (The Fall), “Now the serpent (Satan) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent (Satan), “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves."

IMAGE OF GOD: (Imago Dei - Latin), Genesis 1:27, “ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

IMAGE OF ADAM: HUMANITY NO LONGER BORN IN THE PRISTINE IMAGE OF GOD (after Original Sin), Genesis 5:3-5 “When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

CANON OF SCRIPTURE - Old Testament books – 39  New Testament books – 27  Total 66 books   "CANON" means, "measuring rod or rule".

2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is God-breathed (inspired) and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

2 Peter 1:20-21, “no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

Continue memorizing the D-O-C-T-R-I-N-E acronym. This will teach you to remember the
essentials of The Historic Christian faith at the supermarket, at the doctor, at the
recreation center or gym, or wherever you ar,e and in equipping yourself, God will send
people across your life looking for answers, that have become part of who you are.

More importantly, study everything in this lesson. You will be tested soon!!! All the people in this study have not missed a question yet. That is good! You are learning and committing life giving biblical precepts to your memory. This is being posted, Sunday, Nov. 24, and the questions will be given to you around Tuesday or Wednesday.
